The World Comes Before the Logo

Why we refuse to open the type menu until we know who lives there.

A brief usually arrives as a request for a logo. A logo is the last thing we make.

We start with a different question: what kind of place does this brand belong in? Who lives there? How does it speak? What does it value, and what does it refuse? What does it find funny? What would it put on a wall? What would someone steal from it and keep for ten years?

Once you understand the world, the identity has somewhere to come from.

None of these questions can be answered with a typeface. They are answered with a world, and a world is a set of rules that hold together. When we knew that Burgman believed dinner was an emergency, the mascot could not be a cartoon: it had to be a real cow, photographed like a celebrity, with one intervention, a cape. The letters could not be typeset: they had to be squeezed out of a bottle. Nobody chose those things. The world did.

Sukoon went the other way. The place was a quiet room. The brand sells two minutes, not caffeine, so the identity had to do very little, very carefully. Once the room existed, one green was enough, and every further decision could be tested against the room instead of against our taste.

This is the practical value of the order. A logo made first is a decision that has to be defended. A logo made last is a consequence, and consequences do not need defending. When the menu, the sticker, the uniform and the app screen arrive months later, they have somewhere to come from, and the people making them do not have to ask us.

First you make the world. Then the logo arrives, on time, already dressed.
